Who can teach English in Japan?

Teaching English is perfect for people who wish to experience life in another country. Whether you’re looking to take a break from working at home, go on a paid gap year, or set up a full career overseas. Teaching can be a brilliant springboard to take a leap in any direction you choose.

So long as you’re fluent in English, over 18 years old, and looking for adventure, then teaching could be for you.

You don’t need any previous experience to start teaching in Japan! If you’re new to teaching, you can learn everything you need to know through our online TEFL certification course and be ready to start working within a matter of weeks. You’ll also get additional training when you arrive in Japan.

Most teaching positions in Japan require native speakers (UK/US/CAN/AUS/NZ/SA passport holders), however, it can also be possible for qualified non-natives to secure teaching jobs. Please check for more details.

This can be a bit of a tricky one. Japan has a very conservative society, and schools have strict requirements when it comes to personal appearances. Most importantly:

  • No visible tattoos (if they can be covered by a long-sleeve shirt this should be fine).
  • Shaven or neatly trimmed facial hair.
  • Natural hair colors.
  • Formal working clothes – including a tie and buttoned shirt for men.

When teaching English in Japan, or elsewhere, you won’t need to speak the local language. In fact, it’s usually discouraged to speak any language other than English in the classroom. However, if you do have an interest in learning Japanese, it can be a great opportunity to pick up the language while you’re over there.

If you don’t meet all these requirements, you can still apply through the form below and we’ll help to find what opportunities we can offer you.
