Teaching English in Taiwan

Taiwan is perhaps Asia’s best-kept secret. This island nation is located off the southern coast of China, and is home to great beaches, lush forests, mountains and modern cities such as Taipei and Kaohsiung. It’s famed for being a foodie heaven, and stands proud of its vibrant and open culture. Whether you like art, the outdoors, rooftop bars or exploring traditional aboriginal cultures – Taiwan has everything you could need.

At Let’s TEFL we’re currently matching new teachers with exciting new jobs starting throughout 2024. Read on for more details and how to apply.

Employment package:

Our English teaching placements come with excellent benefits. You can earn a great wage, enjoy a comfortable lifestyle while you’re overseas, and could even save money to take home with you. Check out our example employment package below:

A shared apartment available for NT$16,000 per room in Taipei City.

How’s the accommodation?

Positions in Taiwan rarely come with accommodation provided for you. But don’t fear, this is partly a result of how easy it is to actually find accommodation.

There’s plenty of great Facebook groups to find apartments with other teachers, and sites for finding private places for yourself. We’re happy to show our TEFL course graduates the ropes when it comes to finding apartments in Taiwan, and in some situations our team on the ground in Taipei may be able to accompany you to view apartments and help negotiate your contracts.

Apartments can be rented from NT$8,000-$20,000, with the upper scale often including a gym, and perhaps even a pool during the summer months. When you’re earning in the region of NT$50,000-$70,000 per month there’s plenty leftover after paying for your accommodation.

Who can teach English in Taiwan?

Teaching English is perfect for people who wish to experience life in another country. Whether you’re looking to take a break from working at home, go on a paid gap year, or set up a full career overseas. Teaching can be a brilliant springboard to take a leap in any direction you choose.

So long as you’re fluent in English, over 18 years old, and looking for adventure, then teaching could be for you.

You don’t need any previous experience to start teaching in Taiwan! If you’re new to teaching, you can learn everything you need to know through an online TEFL certification course and be ready to start working within a matter of weeks.

Most teaching positions in Taiwan require native speakers (UK/US/CAN/AUS/NZ/SA passport holders), however, it can be possible for non-natives to secure teaching jobs in Taiwan.

The majority of schools in Taiwan require teachers to hold a bachelor’s degree (in any subject) in order to qualify for a work permit. If you don’t have a degree but wish to teach in Taiwan, please get in touch. In some circumstances a work permit can still be provided through other means.

When teaching English in Taiwan, you won’t need to have any local language skills. In fact, it’s usually discouraged to speak any language other than English in the classroom.

However, if you do wish to learn Mandarin Chinese once you arrive in Taiwan you’ll have plenty of opportunities to do so. It can be a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture and can be a great boost for your resume!

Very!

Taiwan is one of the first (and only) countries in Asia to openly support gay marriage. In May last year, the Constitutional Court ruled that same-sex couples have the right to marry under the Constitution of Taiwan, and that their unions should be treated as marriage by law.

Yes! Taiwan is a great place for vegetarians!

Taiwan retained a lot of the Buddhist vegetarian traditions which were lost during the cultural revolution years in China. While their concept on vegetarian/vegan food is a little different to in the west (often excluding garlic and onion), there’s a huge range of traditional and modern veggie-friendly cuisine in Taiwan.

If you don’t meet all these requirements, you can still apply through the form below and we’ll help to find what opportunities we can offer you.
