When it comes to making your video there are two things to consider before starting – the first is how to film it, and the second is how long you should be aiming to make it.

How should you film an intro video?

It’s perfectly fine to use a smartphone camera to film your video. Schools aren’t concerned with exceptional video quality or editing effects – they just need to be able to clearly see and hear you.

Here are some tips for filming your video:

  • Stand up straight in a tidy, well-lit room, or outside in a quiet area away from traffic noise and wind.
  • Place your camera on a ledge or shelf – avoid holding it yourself as if you’re taking a selfie as this generally results in a shaky video.
  • Make sure all of your face fits into the screen. Imagine wearing a shirt, you should be able to see at least the top 3-4 buttons to avoid being too close to the camera.
  • Film it from head-height – not from below or above your head.

Following these tips will help you to create a clear video that presents you in the best possible way, and avoids negative body language.

How long should it be?

We recommend keeping your intro video between 30-60 seconds in length.

Any shorter than this may seem like you’re not fully interested in applying for the job, or have little to offer. Any longer than 60 seconds and recruiters will likely lose interest. It’s important to remember that the people working for these schools are likely not too fluent in English themselves, and may not be able to grasp the point of long stories or intricate explanations.
